Saw Spider-Man tonight. It's been so hyped. Roger Ebert called this the best superhero movie ever made. Steve said it comes through on every level. Nina's boyfriend said it was 95% perfect. All the reviews on Ain't It Cool News called it perfect. So much hype.
I don't disagree. I really liked it. Liked it a lot. But it was ehh. Alfred Molina was great as Doc Ock. But he's always great, ever since his first movie role as Satipo in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Bargaining with Indy in the opening scene, "Throw me the Idol, I'll throw you the whip." And as the drug dealer Rahad Jackson in the tense Boogie Nights scene where firecrackers are exploding and Sister Christian is blasting. Spider hyphen Man left me cold in the end. I thought the emotions just didn't resonate. Outside of capturing the sense of joy and freedom of swinging through the streets of NYC perfectly and showing what a loser he is, I felt detached. I didn't love the first movie and I think it's Tobey Maguire's acting that's messing it up for me. I think he good at showing alienated nerd, but his emotions doesn't soar with Mary Jane or any scene where he has to show that he's making important choices. He's too stoic, flat. He's so blank. I liked the movie, see it. It's fun. Of course it's a popcorn movie. But I don't think I'll want to see it again.
