So what's the 1st show I decided to see? THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
I saw the movie version with E recently and I really enjoyed it so seeing the show on Broadway sounded like fun.
This show has been on for so long that I'm sure the performances aren't as powerful as when it started but the actor playing the Phantom had a great voice. Lots of emotions. But the actress who played Christine was very good but sounded too operatic for the songs. I was amazed at all the choreography and singing that must be sustained throughout the whole performance. But what blew me away was the set design. Poof, before my eyes, a bare stage turns into a boat ride through an underground misty lake with candelabras everywhere. Visually stunning. And that phantom kept popping up everywhere in the shadows. The falling chandelier wasn't as impressive as I imagined. I've never really liked Musicals before. I can't get into the idea of dialogue being sung. MASTER OF THE HOUSE! Keeper of the Inn! BAH! The only other Musical that I liked was CABARET. But that had more to do with the story. And the decadent setting of 1930s Berlin. And the music. And Alan Cummings. OK everything. Just the best musical/drama ever. Sure, the Phantom is super cheese. But it was great. Hummable rock opera tunes, spectacular staging. More bang for the 1/2 price tickets. I want to see more Broadway. Bring on those CATS!
