Where does the Chinese Yin Yang symbol come from?

This is the origin of why the Chinese Yin Yang symbol looks the way it does. I never knew the shape was based on the movement of the sun. Interesting.

nice, it's like the symbol itself evolved in a way that references the natural ease of it's definition, and the sun and the earth did all the work!

Very interesting article but I also wanted to say the the illustration of the symbol you've used is just about the most beautiful version I've ever seen. I can't take my eyes off it... well I'm exagerating a little!

And I'll add that the symetry off the universe is so beautiful and is eloquently portrayed in that symbol... no wonder it strikes such a deep chord with our soul"s. It is directly connected to the seasons and cycles that we have evolved within.

The yin yang is not cause and effect like most people think. The ying yang is a symbolism for the belief that everything needs balance in order to be in harmony. This is physically shown in the small white or black pieces in the larger opposite color. Many Taoists, as well as individuals following Daoism and Confucius, use this symbolism as a basic reflection of their beliefs.

Agree. This isn't about a cause & effect thing. It's a symbol indeed. Yin and Yang represents the male and female nature, or the positive and the negative, or the top and bottom, or the back and front, day and night, dark and light, or right and wrong, or the opposite poles of electrical charges and so on and so forth. This one thing I love to believe & keep in mind..Yin Yang symbolizes the balance of nature and that in every positive existence there is a negative one too. So, i'll gonna have it tattooed on my nape one day when i'm ready. =D
