summer in the city

Saw Kill Bill Vol. 2 again. Liked it even more on second viewing. Loved watching Uma act through her expressive eyes and this time, David Carradine's vocal cadence / lisp didn't bother me as much.
After the movie, Dave Battlesteen complained to the theater manager about the disgusting bathrooms and the lack of soap. The manager noted it but didn't seem to care. Dave pushed for some kind of reparations. Before Dave got all medieval on his ass, the manager coughed up some free tickets.

Saturday was my favorite street festival. The Ninth Avenue Food Festival. More food and drinks, less socks & tweezers. Tried a little bit of every delicious thing, but amazingly, the best thing we tasted was something called Irish Ice. I never heard of this. What do the Irish know of Ice. But it was so good. It tasted like gelato. And also these little biscuit sandwiches. turkey with honey mustard over in a flaky biscuit. yum. Scott drove in from Ithaca for a postponed Mother's Day family dinner and met us for a little bit before meeting them. We walked the rest of the festival but it was so hot & bright out. It was summer. We passed by this blank façade building with no signs giving away its identity. Was it a club? People of all kind were walking in and out. We went up the panelled lit escalator and it opened up into an atriumed lobby/bar. Very cool looking. Turns out it was the Hudson Hotel. An Ian Schrager Hotel designed by Philippe Starck. The inside bar looked like it was a set from the movie 2001. Futuristic Mod rooms with old European furniture. But we couldn't stay. The Preakness was about to start. Undefeated Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones was the favorite. We went to the OTB and I placed a $10 Exacta bets on Smarty Jones and Imperialism and went to Matthew's new apartment up in Columbia University to watch it. Great space. I gotta move to the city. We blasted the AC, sat on the couch and watched Smarty Jones kick some serious horse ass. At the final turn, he ran away from the pack. This horse is going to win the Triple Crown. 3 more weeks till Belmont. But I was pissed. I was going to place a $10 exacta on Smarty Jones and Rock Hard 10 but Simone dissuaded me. No horse with that name is going to win. Damn, I could've won $125.
