The great Richard Avedon, died at the age of 81 while on assignment. I saw his show at the Met a few years back. His portraits against white seamless were stark and raw and often time grotesque. Maybe his subjects didn't like how he captured them. But they were powerful and revealing. The portraits I remembered most were of his dying father. They were cold and seemingly distant for the subject matter but they affected me deeply.
