Busy weekend. On Friday, Simone’s friend Maria came up from Miami for the weekend. We met for dinner at Mama Mexico. A hyper festive restaurant with a house mariachi band that wanders the dining room and where it seems that everyone there is celebrating their birthday. Which is perfect because its Maria’s birthday tomorrow. The place was loud. Every time the mariachis would sing their version of the birthday song, the manager would run around like a madman with two fist of tequila and pour shots down the throat of anyone who would tilt their heads back and open their mouths wide. Like hungry little baby birds. Erin says that tequila is the only alcohol that’s an anti depressant. Sure, but it’ll knock you on your ass. But who can say no to free shots of cheap booze? Not I. Afterwards we caught the cable show DIRTY JOBS. Where they look at the worst jobs in the world. This episode was about an exterminator who had to work on a completely roach infested trailer home. A home so infested, and I mean infested with a plague of cockroaches. WHY? How do people live like this? Open a cupboard and roaches scatter all around you. I thought setting back ad copy was a dirty job but this was SO F’ING DIS-GUST-TING!
On Saturday we met up to see a matinee showing of Sweeney Todd on Broadway. We sat in the box seats in honor of Lincoln’s birthday. Finally some leg room. There was a mini drama since someone was sitting in my seat. Get out old lady or I’ll kick you over the railing. I didn’t know anything about this play except that Angela Lansbury was in it in the 80s and that there was a barber who was a demon who lived on a street called Fleet. I still don’t know what it’s about. The play was bloody macabre and a little hard for me to get into. The performances were great though. Especially Patti Lupone and the bald lead actor who looked like Peter Gabriel. The set design was simple in black and white and all the actors on stage were also performing the music. See Patti Lupone play tuba while she shakes her junk. It was all interesting to see with the stage choreography working the minimal stage and the instrumentation but it was all very distracting and I was missing dialogue. Standing ovation of course. As we were leaving, we had a minor “star” sighting. We saw the bright white head of John O’Hurley of Dancing with the Stars and Jay Peterman fame coming out from his performance in Chicago.
IT IS SO cold. We went to Billy’s Bakery for some cupcakes and my favorite, flaky, luscious coconut cream pie. Then we went over to my apartment to warm up. It’s so cozy here. We wanted to eat close so we went down the block to Blue Smoke for ribs. We waited an hour and a half for a table but conversation and company was great. We discussed getting into unattainable relationships, judgmental opinionated personalities and if there is an afterlife. Perfect dinner conversation. Especially over these ribs. They were more than delicious. They were SUCK-U-LENT! And Maria is very laid back and is easy to talk to. Effortless and a great sense of humor.
I was so tired, stuffed and buzzed. But I still had Marina’s birthday party to go to. I was suppose to be there 5 hour ago. I was having second thoughts. My apartment is so close and it’s so cold out. I just wanted to stay in and sleep. But I did want to celebrate Marina’s special day. So I cabbed down to Fat Baby. The place was crowded but the music was good. Marina reserved a table upstairs. Most had come and gone but Rob, Teevo and her German friend were still there. Marina greeted me with, “What took you so long?!” I know, I’M SORRY. But I’m here. They wanted to go dancing afterwards but I was too exhausted. As we left, Oceana happened to be there and was also leaving with her friends. I was introduced to her new friend Abby who looked like 80s teen mall singer Tiffany, and her boyfriend. He wasn’t really interested in meeting me. They were going to Piano's then Dark Room. But I needed to get out of the cold.
While waiting for the 1st Ave bus in the cold, a man wearing only a tee-shirt asked for a light, then a cigarette. It took him a minute to light it. He said thanks then stood right alongside me. I was too tired to make polite conversation as he puffed away. A homeless man walked by and he gave him $2. You got a good heart I told him. “Man, you know what I am? Guess. No? An Attorney.” Very unlikely I thought. “I like make, like, $2 for me? I make this in like, a half an hour.” Well, he’s obviously not an Accountant.
Slept in late Sunday. Laura woke me up from scouting locations for a photo shoot. I got up and took care of some errands. And met Maria, Dave & Sim in Chinatown for some congee porridge. We ordered more food than the table could hold. All delicious. Dave was feeling tense all week so he got a 20 minute massage, but without the happy ending. But the night did end happy. We went to the underground bar DOUBLE HAPPINESS for some green tea martinis. Sunday night's attract a mellow crowd. Radiohead & Depeche Mode was playing. "I'm taking a ride with my best friend's CAR." So much fun but I am so much tired.
Oh Golly. This post is waaaay too long and self indulgent. But PUCK IT!

{ The phone directory in our lobby. Coincidence? A chance pairing? I think not. }
